Unfortunately there is a lot of mis-information out there. The number one reason this is happening is because people don't know about what this reef is and what the project will do. We can all help fix that.
Fiction: It's too late to stop this from happening
FACT: It hasn't happened yet, even if it does there will be more in the future. It will never be too late to stop these projects and the beach and reef will be protected if we do.
Fiction: Its just a bunch of rocks
Fact: Our Near-shore reef system is home to over a thousand species of organisms including Juvenile sea turtles and 257 species of fish.
Citation: Florida Department of Environmental Protection Page ES 1-4 Ecological Functions of Nearshore Hardbottom Habitats in East Florida: A Literature Synthesis.
Fiction: The project underway will only bury 10 percent of the reef.
fact: this Beach widening project will bury 100% of the on-shore reef and keep it buried...And they know it.
"Sedimentation (burial) of the landward edge of the nearshore hardbottom by direct placement and subsequent equilibration/diffusion has been predicted in the project formulation" -Brevard County Natural Resources Appendix J, page 3
Fiction: The erosion to the beach here is caused by the port.
FAct: In the Army corp's own report they state that this is not likely.
"Canaveral Harbor Federal Navigation Project is approximately 14 miles north of the Mid-Reach study area. The inlet has jetties on both the north and south sides and is a potential obstruction to the normal north to south littoral movement of sand. Studies by Kriebel, et al (2002) and Kraus, et al, (1999) detailed the effects of Canaveral Harbor on Brevard County beaches. These reports...concluded that Canaveral Harbor’s influence on sediment transport likely does not extend as far south as the Mid-Reach."
Fiction: The beach will disappear, and A1A Will be damaged if we don't do this.
FACT: Not in our lifetimes.
"Despite the fairly large fluctuations in shoreline position in the short-term, the MHWL(mean high water line) was relatively stable at -0.2 feet per year, 1972-2005."
Fiction: These nourishment projects are not having a negative impact on sea turtles.
fact: After the project in 2014, total nests along the mid-reach declined 50% and this was reflected in 2015 and 2016 according to FWC nesting numbers.
Fiction: The material being placed in the mid-reach is coming from offshore.
Fact: Brevard County Natural resources has confirmed multiple times that The material being placed in the mid-reach is coming from inland.
We are being told that the future beach widening project will be using material from Canaveral Shoals, however the project design calls for using either 'upland' sources(upland means inland) or shoal material.
Fiction: The money couldn't have been spent on anything else.
fact: it's tax money from several sources, it could have been spent on lots of things...it could have not been spent.
Citation: Common Sense - we all have it. Don't let people disrespect it.
Fiction: Fighting this project will make people angry and create enemies.
FACT: People in this community love this reef, anyone who stands up for it will also be loved.
